Here are the most common rug sizes for various types of rooms in the USA:
Living Room:
- 8′ x 10′
- 9′ x 12′
- For small living rooms (~150 sq ft): 6′ x 9′
- For medium living rooms (~216 sq ft): 8′ x 10′
- For large living rooms (~300 sq ft): 9′ x 12′
Bedroom:
- 8′ x 10′ (most common for queen beds)
- 9′ x 12′ (most common for king beds)
- 12′ x 15′ (for large bedrooms with California king beds)
- Bedroom rugs should extend 18-24″ beyond the sides and foot of the bed
Dining Room:
- 8′ x 8′ (for round or square tables seating 4)
- 8′ x 10′ or 9′ x 12′ (for rectangular tables seating 6-8)
- Dining room rugs should be large enough for chairs to remain on the rug when pulled out
Kitchen:
- 2′ x 3′ or 2′ x 4′ (small accent rugs)
- 3′ x 5′ or 4′ x 6′ (for larger kitchens)
- 2′ x 6′ or 2′ x 8′ runner rugs
In general, rugs should be sized to anchor the furniture in the room, with most of the furniture legs resting on the rug.
- Leave 10-24″ of bare floor between the rug and the walls.
- The rug shape should complement the room shape (e.g. round rugs for round tables).
- Custom rug sizes are also an option for uniquely shaped rooms.
